What is coaching?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”

So what does that really mean? Well, a coach is someone who works with you to help clear your mind and set intentional goals which are followed by actions. They hold you accountable and focus on the now rather than the past.

Coaching is a series of meetings where you and your coach discuss your goals and work towards them. They don’t tell you what to do but rather encourage you to see things differently and overcome whatever has been holding back from achieving your full potential.
What can I expect from coaching?
Coaching is best done over a series of sessions where there is a particular goal you want to achieve. Some examples goals you might want to achieve through coaching could be to change career, improve your health, create better relationships or generally take more intentional action in your life.

Generally sessions with your coach, conducted in person, over the phone or via Skype, will last for about one hour. Throughout the session your coach will help you stay on track while helping you to fully understand your obstacles and take ownership for your actions. They may help you to see things from a new angle or challenge you to step outside your comfort zone.

Ultimately, you can expect as much as you put in. At the end of the day, it’s your life and you can choose to take action or stick with status quo.
How can I find the best coach for me?
People ‘mesh’ together differently. It can be a bit like dating - sometimes the sparks fly and sometimes it feels like you’re speaking a different language.

A coach could offer a trial session for free or at a charge less than their usual rate. You may just need to ask for it. In this session you can get a taste as to their style/energy. You can also ask questions about their qualifications, their school of thought and their key focus areas.

Some things to think about before you start looking are:
  1. How would you like meetings to be conducted. In person or is Skype okay?
  2. What do you want to achieve through coaching?
  3. What type of people do you “click” with best? Are you quite spiritual yourself or would you prefer a quite formal relationship? (PS. it doesn’t hurt to see how it goes with someone who you think you might not mesh with because it can get you thinking in a completely new way)
  4. What kind of availability do you have?
  5. Learn a little more about your prospective coach
Should I choose a coach or a therapist?
A coach will focus more on the present and on the actions you could take to achieve your goals. A therapist will help you to unpack the past and is also the right choice for conditions or mental illness.

If you’re unsure on this, please contact us or give us a call. We’d be happy to help you answer this question.
Is it better to get a coach near me?
It is a matter of personal preference whether or not you meet your coach in person.

However, one of the things we hear most often about keeping a commitment like going to the gym, taking a class or other self improvement activities (like coaching) is that people like you just don't have the time to get there. Is coaching going to be different?

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of finding a coach in your location:

PROs

Face to face provides added opportunity to connect
It is less likely your interaction will suffer from ‘IT issues”

CONs
You may have to travel to the meeting place for your appointment
Options could be limited in your area
You might have to put on pants

What does coaching cost?
The cost of coaching varies depending on the level of experience of your coach and the package you select (i.e. the number of sessions you choose to commit to).
